Johnston Mill Natural Preserve
House of 1000 Trees
I affectionately refer to this project as ‘The House of 1000 Trees’. Backing up to Johnston Mill Natural Preserve in Chapel Hill the homeowners wanted their front yard to reflect better the forested beauty that existed in their backyard.
Over 40 native / well adapted canopy and understory trees were installed including Cornus florida, Carpinus caroliniana, Nyssa sylvantica and various oak trees. Working in collaboration with Coob’s Landscaping a natural swale was excavated and planted with native and well adapted grasses and forbes to catch and process run-off from strong storm events. The swale will provide effective stormwater management while the forest matures. It also performs double duty as a pollinator garden with year round nectar and habitat for local wildlife.
